Name a Ningaloo Manta Ray and Win!

The Ningaloo Reef is home to a large resident population of graceful manta rays. To date, over 800 individual mantas have been identified in and around Coral Bay using the unique dot patterns found on the belly of each manta ray. In conjunction with Project Manta and The University of Queensland, this identification program has now been expanded to include the northern part of the Ningaloo Reef, around Exmouth.

To commemorate this, the Exmouth Visitor Centre and Project Manta are asking the public to name the 50th manta ray identified as part of Project Manta. The winning entry will win two tour tickets to swim with Ningaloo manta rays thanks to Coral Bay Eco Tours.

Project Manta seeks to examine how environmental factors affect the movements of manta rays, both within known hot spots such as the Ningaloo Reef and right throughout northern Australia. An understanding of why manta rays occupy particular sites at particular times is important, especially in the face of climate change.

Project Manta also encourages citizens to contribute to this research by submitting any photos taken of manta rays they see throughout the Ningaloo region. The unique spot pattern on a manta ray’s belly is like a fingerprint, so a photo of the underside of a manta allows the research team to cross reference their existing database and determine if it is a new or previously identified Ningaloo manta ray.

The 50th individual manta ray identified as part of Project Manta’s northern Ningaloo Reef expansion was a female ray that was part of a large feeding aggregation of mantas which took place inside Exmouth Gulf in October 2016. During this aggregation, spotter plane pilots reported seeing more than 100 manta rays swimming and feeding within an area of just a few kilometres of coast, close to shore near the Exmouth township.

Exmouth Visitor Centre manager, Kristy Bryan-Smith said the Ningaloo Reef and in particular Coral Bay is one of very few places in the world that is home to a resident population of manta rays.

“Because of the large resident population of manta rays, tours to swim with these huge, but completely harmless and very playful creatures are available every day of the year out of Coral Bay” Ms Bryan-Smith said.

“Snorkelling with a Ningaloo Reef manta ray is an unforgettable experience, as these rays are known for their love of interacting with swimmers.”

Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort our new name from December 1

The award-winning Novotel Ningaloo Resort will be rebranded to become Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort from December 1, 2016.

After ten years with the AccorHotels Group, the owners have decided to rename the resort, which will no longer operate under the Novotel brand.

Ningaloo has become an international tourist destination and Mantarays is a very established world-class resort ready to compliment future growth.

The World Heritage status has given Ningaloo an international profile and with swimming with the whale sharks, a bucket list adventure, we are proud to be part of an iconic experience.

The AccorHotels relationship has been a success for both parties and the brand helped establish the resort as the premier accommodation located in Ningaloo and the Gascoyne.

We now see this as the right move at a time of growth for Ningaloo and the rise in international tourism,” he said.

In leaving a corporate brand we look forward to aligning the resort offering with the attractions of the local area.

We would like to thank the AccorHotels Group for our mutually beneficial association.

Please note:

We don’t administer the AccorPlus program. We are giving AccorPlus the opportunity to contact their members who currently hold bookings with us and they are in the process of doing this. Whilst this change has been in the planning and negotiation process for some time the final decisions have only just been made and we are now in a position to let you all know.

For AccorPlus and LeClub Members who currently hold accommodation reservations booked either direct with the hotel or the AccorHotels website at November 30 we will continue to offer them their members benefits. As of November 30 we will be disconnected from all Accor systems which means we will be unable to award points for stays.

For casual dining in Mantaray’s restaurant once we leave the AccorHotels group dining discounts will no longer apply. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused you. If you have any issues regarding your membership please contact the AccorPlus members hotline on 1300 363 637.

If you have any issues regarding your upcoming stay at the resort or using your card in Mantaray’s Restaurant please don’t hesitate to contact the resort on (08) 9949 0000.

After December 1, please use for information and bookings

Whaleshark Festival Magic

Swimming with the whale sharks, manta rays, and colourful fish are a bucket list adventure at Ningaloo. This year even the first humpbacks of the season appeared early for the Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival (May 21-24). The magnificent fringing reef runs 260km along the coast and provides a plentiful supply of krill for the annual return of the whale sharks. The world's largest living fish grow up to 18metres in length.

For those who didn't venture out to the reef the festival offered bands and entertainers including the Sunshine Brothers, Morgan Bain, 'Fingers' Mitch Cullen, James Abberley and Mike Elrington.

The Gala Opening was a sell out.  Held by the Novotel Ningaloo Resort pool guests mingled under a starry sky or danced to the sounds of the Sunshine Brothers. They dined on delicacies created by chefs from the resort's award winning Mantaray's restaurant.

ASP Xtreme thrilled crowds with their motocross skills and their acrobatic displays riding their bikes high up into the air at Talanjee Oval on Saturday.

The Festival Finale was held at Exmouth Yacht Club with bands, entertainment, games and a mystical mime by stilt walkers from the Gascoyne in May Troupe. The artists portrayed the Ningaloo coast historical characters including the early sailors, settlers, and sea life brought to life under special lighting.
